The best-known selling point of solar power is that it generates emissions-free electricity to lower your energy costs. The benefits do not stop there, though. A study at the University of California San Diego has shown proof of another reason to install a solar system on your roof. The study was led by Jan Kleissl, professor of environmental engineering at the UC San Diego Jacobs School of Engineering.
Using thermal imaging technology, the researchers found that during the daylight hours, a building’s ceiling was 5° cooler under the solar panels than under an exposed portion of the roof. The panels basically acted as shades for the roof, absorbing a portion of the heat and preventing it from entering the building. The result is that your building’s temperature stays lower and your HVAC systems do not have to work as hard throughout the day. This added benefit only works to reduce your electricity costs even further.
